Light Night

Birmingham’s second Light Night will take place on Saturday 10th October in the City Centre, the evening before the World Half Marathon.

The centrepiece will be Bollywood Steps in Victoria Square to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Town Hall. Bollywood Steps is a unique outdoor dance spectacular celebrating all the classic Bollywood moments in a series of dazzling dance numbers with lighting, fireworks, colourful costumes and water effects.

The performances start with a half hour workshop to learn the steps, and then last for 50 minutes with schoolchildren youth dancers and dhol drummers.  They start at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

A stage in Centenary Square will provide entertainment from 6.00pm to 7.50pm and from 8.50pm ending with a spectacular fireworks display at 10.45pm. Performers include Black Voices, Irish dancers, Digby Fairweather, Cotswold Male Voice Choir, a brass band and aerial dancers.

The Irish Pipe and Drums, Saxophonist Byron Channer, fire jugglers, stilt walkers and street entertainment will be based around the City Centre.

Trees will be lit up in Brindleyplace, where there will be street entertainment and various offers at the bars and restaurants.


There will be architectural lighting on the Town Hall, a lantern making workshop in Paradise Forum, a pumpkin trail across Centenary Way and a Choral concert by Candlelight with Ex Cathedra at Birmingham Cathedral.

Trees will be lit up throughout the City and St. Paul’s Square will be illuminated with its own tree lights for the first time ever.

Large Light sculptures will be in each of the squares.

The Museum and Art Gallery and the Central Library will be open until 11.00pm. The Library will have reader activity to tie in with the Birmingham Book Festival.

The IAAF World Half Marathon takes place at the Council House and there is an EDF energy marquee situated in Chamberlain Square.
