Alesha Dixon and Scouting For Girls at the Christmas Lights Switch On
Birmingham City Council and BRMB today made the first announcement about this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On event, with Alesha Dixon and Scouting For Girls confirmed for the annual free concert at Millennium Point on Saturday 8 November. Many more top acts will soon be announced.
The event will start at 3pm and will see these and many other top UK pop acts perform to a packed crowd. Alesha Dixon, who recently won the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing series in 2007, has just released her new single The Boy Does Nothing, a feel-good blend of mambo and pop.
Scouting For Girls have been a regular favourite at the Switch On event, they are returning to Birmingham after a stunningly successful year. Their debut album, the self-titled Scouting For Girls, went double platinum earlier this year after a two week stint at No.1 of the UK album charts, followed by a triumphant summer of festival appearances. Their new single I Wish I Was James Bond is out on 3 November.
The event will also see the very first switch on of the City’s new Christmas lights. As well as adding festive sparkle to the city centre, the new lights will use 75% less energy than the old ones, helping the Council to meet the commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.
Cllr Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said: “This amazing concert will be the perfect start to the Christmas season, with such a great line up of top performers. The festive season is a chance to bring people together to celebrate, and Birmingham’s fantastic programme of free events will allow everyone to take part in the festivities.”
The Christmas Lights Switch On, organised by Birmingham City Council with support from BRMB, will launch a light-themed weekend, which sees the Hindu celebration of Diwali (the festival of light) at Millennium Point on Sunday 9 November, 3-7pm.
The weekend marks the start of the Birmingham’s Christmas celebrations, which include the opening of the Frankfurt Christmas Market on 13th November followed by Birmingham’s Christmas Craft Fair on the 20th November. Other events include a Reindeer and Lantern Parade on 23rd November, the Thomas Vale Pantomime Horse Grand National on the 30th November and Carols in the City on 13th December.
