Millennium Point Reaches Milestone
Millennium Point was always an ambitious project for the city of Birmingham, but opened to the public on-time and on-budget, back in September 2001. Seven years on and Millennium Point, the largest Millennium project outside of London, has proved its worth to become a profitable organisation.
Sir Bernard Zissman, Chairman of Millennium Point Trust speaking in advance of the Annual General Meeting said: “I am very pleased to announce that Millennium Point is now officially out of its development stage. For the first time since opening, we are a fully let building and in 2007/08 we recorded a surplus. This is an immense achievement for all parties involved in the project. We have overcome a great deal of changes and obstacles in the past years, and our success is testament to those who have believed in and supported us including Birmingham City Council, Birmingham City University, the Millennium Commission and our corporate sponsors.”
Furthermore, it’s not only Millennium Point that has experienced record numbers. In 2007/08 Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum based within Millennium Point attracted a record number of 300,000 visitors, including over 70,000 school children. The exciting IMAX Cinema, located at Millennium Point welcomed over 100,000 visitors throughout the same period. However, this figure was surpassed in the summer of 2008, when 36,000 film fans came to the IMAX Cinema at Millennium Point to experience the movie spectacular, The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience.
In terms of what the future holds for Millennium Point, Sir Bernard Zissman comments: “Even allowing for the very difficult economic times in which we now live, we will continue to grow and evolve as the new Eastside of Birmingham takes shape. We are playing a key role in the development of the City Park, and with exciting developments on our doorstep like the new Birmingham City University campus and Vertical Theme Park, Millennium Point has a lot to look forward to.”
