Black Risotto Tickles Taste Buds on Filini’s New Menu
A Birmingham award-winning restaurant has launched a new menu for the autumn – the highlight of which is an unusual black seafood risotto.
Filini, at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Beetham Tower, has refreshed its already mouth-watering menu to include the hard-to-come-by black rice dish, which includes tiger prawns, mussels and calamari.
“As far as I know, we are the only Birmingham restaurant with a black risotto on its menu at the moment, perhaps because the black rice is hard to come by – due to the fact it’s produced in small quantities and is therefore expensive,” explains Filini’s executive chef, Chris Duffy.
“Our Black risotto Venere with tiger prawns, mussels and calamari is a delicately-flavoured dish that subtly brings out the exquisite flavours of the choice sea foods, whilst enhancing the nutty, rich flavour of the black rice.”
The medium grain black rice is grown in the Po river valleys of Piedmont in Italy. Rich in vitamins and minerals, it makes an excellent dietary choice as well as an unusual addition to the dinner table.
Another new arrival on the Filini menu is “Brasato al Barolo” braised beef in red wine sauce with soft polenta – “a melt-in-the-mouth dish with a gentle piquancy”, says Chris.
The latest menu will enhance further the restaurant’s reputation for serving up top quality food in chic surroundings. Filini has been shortlisted for the equivalent of the hotel Oscars in this year’s Catey Awards, run by Caterer & Hotelkeeper magazine, to be held at a glitzy ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on November 7.
In March 2007, the restaurant was voted one of the top ten places in the UK to eat pasta by The Times newspaper – and that was just for starters: a few months later, Filini was presented with a Gold Standard Italian Restaurant Award 2007 by the Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association for its “outstanding” authentic cuisine and dining experience. It is shortlisted in this year’s awards.
