The Observer Food Monthly Awards Have Launched

The Observer Food Monthly awards have launched for 2008 marking the start of the search for the best restaurants, retailers and chefs in the country. Now in their sixth year the awards have discovered, boosted and given recognition to a host of chefs, food producers and industry figures including, Heston Blumenthal, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay.

Nominations are invited from readers for best restaurant, sponsored by toptable.com; best place to drink; best ethical eatery; food personality, sponsored by Weber; best independent local shop or on-line retailer; best Sunday lunch sponsored by First Direct; best cheap eat and best breakfast. Those who nominate will be entered into a prize draw and will have the chance to win a selection of prizes including a 3 night luxury food break at Prestonfield, Edinburgh.


A panel of expert judges that includes: Alex James, cheese maker; Sheherezade Goldsmith, environmental campaigner; Joanna Blythman, food writer; Ruth Rogers of the River café; Tom Parker-Bowles, food writer for Tatler; Mark Hix, restauranter; Keith Hurdman,  Thornton’s chocolatier; Nigel Slater, The Observer’s food writer; Jay Rayner, Observer restaurant critic; Caroline Boucher, OFM deputy editor and Nicola Jeal, OFM editor and chair of the judging panel will decide on the remaining categories of outstanding achievement, best newcomer, best producer and a the new category for 2008 of best readers’ recipes sponsored by UKTV Food.

The winners will be announced in the March issue of OFM and they will receive their prizes at an award ceremony in London.
