Viking Invasion at Birimingham Museum & Art Gallery

There will be a fascinating opportunity to journey back to over 1,000 years
ago at the free Viking Weekend at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery on
Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 October (1 - 4pm both days).

At this family friendly event, children will be able to try on Viking
costumes, chat to costumed characters and find out about life all those
centuries ago. Historical re-enactor Mark Vance will be dressed as a
Viking soldier, discussing battle tactics and describing how they used to
lock their shields together to build a shield wall to provide cover for
advancing and defending troops.

Visitors will be able to handle replica helmets, shields, chainmail shirts,
and a Viking dagger called a scramasax. There will be some fun
Viking-themed crafts including designing a Viking brooch, puzzles and
quizzes, fascinating stories and weaving demonstrations.

This is Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery’s first Viking event and is part
of an annual programme of popular historically themed weekends. The year
will conclude with the wonderful Victorian Christmas Weekend on December
13th and 14th ,when visitors will be able to meet Queen Victoria, enjoy
carol singing and make festive decorations.

All activities are offered on a drop-in basis for family groups and
children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
