Airport Staff Raise Over £1700 For Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
Birmingham International Airport staff and directors have raised over £1700 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The charity’s annual West Midlands Walk to Cure Diabetes took place on Sunday at Drayton Manor Park and Birmingham Airport sponsored the event and participated in the 5 mile walk.
The Airport Company was a Bronze sponsor and Joe Kelly, Acting Managing Director said: “As a company this is the fourth year that we have supported this very worthwhile charity. We were delighted to sponsor the JDRF in their research to find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes. I am also pleased that members of our staff could take part on the day and help raise this commendable amount of sponsorship money.”
Laura Turner, from the Airport’s Human Resources Team, took part and said: “This is the third year that I have taken part in the walk. I was happy to take part in the walk again to try and raise money for this charity that I have learnt so much about over the past three years and was pleased to be able to do my bit towards the fantastic £1700 that we raised. Although Sunday was a very wet day, luckily it did not put off the crowds of people that were there, even if we were very soggy at the end!”
Type 1 Diabetes affects about 350,000 people in the UK with 20,000 of them being children. There has been a five-fold increase in children under that age of 5 being affected by the disease. Type 1 diabetes is life threatening which has a lifelong effect on both sufferers and their families.
