Rising Star of The Spoken Word Scene Brings City Tale To Life At The REP
Following sell-out shows at London’s Southbank, Birmingham writer and performer Steve ‘Polarbear’ Camden brings his groundbreaking show If I Cover My Nose You Can’t See Me to Birmingham Repertory Theatre from October 14 – 16.
If I Cover My Nose You Can’t See Me tells the story of a 28-year-old man stuck in a dead-end job and desperate for a change when he meets an inquisitive10-year-old boy. Set against a city backdrop, the story of both characters unfolds as they affect each other’s lives more than they could ever be aware of. For the performance Steve ‘Polarbear’ Camden will be joined by artist Goonism who will create a larger-than-life mural inspired by the story in the theatre foyer each night.
Steve says of his first full-length show, “I wanted to create a good story about real characters that felt relevant to me. My hope is that people will come and see the performance and relate to what they hear in some way and believe enough in the characters and their world to come with them for the journey of the piece. And, at the end audiences get to see Goonism’s brilliant mural that he’s has been busy creating during the show. ”
Born and raised in Birmingham Steven Camden aka Polarbear is one of the most respected spoken word artists in the UK. Steve discovered he had a talent for spoken word performance by accident. He was about to go onstage to introduce a friend’s band when there was a powercut and so the only option was to entertain the crowd. The snowball started when an audience member invited him to perform at Glastonbury, which led to performances at the Ledbury Poetry Festival, the Southbank and the beginnings of a career that is still gathering momentum.
Goonism aka Pete Wilson is a contemporary visual artist from Leicester. He’s been involved with graffiti art since the mid 1990s developing his own style and characters christened the Goon Squad.
The show has been produced by Apples & Snakes, the UK’s leading organisation for performance poetry. Established in 1982 as a platform for popular, high-quality and cross-cultural poetry, it has been the development ground for many high profile poets and artists, inspiring over 60,000 young people through workshops and reaching over four million audience members in theatres, galleries, schools and prisons nationwide.
