Revelations at Soho House

There will be live music, fascinating exhibitions and a celebration of a famous local recording studio amongst the entertainment and activities taking place as part of the free ‘Handsworth Revelations’ at Soho House Museum on Sunday 5th October, which has been organised as part of Black History Month.

There will be fabulous activities throughout the day.  Visitors will be able to join in an interactive South American music workshop with guest artist Caliche, create their own digital self portrait with Brian Homer, enjoy steel pan and rap performances with Handsworth young people, singing workshops with Milton Godfrey and participate in a filming workshop with Mikey Godfrey.  There will also be the chance to chat with members of the Handsworth Photographic Society, whose ‘In the Picture’ exhibition is currently on display at Soho House Museum.

Also on display will be the results of a project by local young people on the former Hollick and Taylor recording studio on Grosvenor Road which is nearby.  The studio recorded many eminent acts during the 1950s, 60s & 70s including Cliff Richard, Noddy Holder, The Spencer Davis Group and Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds.   The building has received substantial funding to restore and revamp the studios and the state-of-the -art facility is now home to the Centre for Music and Arts Technology and is open for public use.

The ‘Handsworth Revelations’ project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery’s Fund Young Roots Fund Project  and is organised in association with the Centre of Music and Technology.  The event is part of Black History Month which takes place nationwide every October and has been celebrated in Birmingham since 1993.  For further details on Black History Month please visit www.birminghamblackhistory.com.
