Lord Michael Heseltine Visits Millenium Point
On Monday 29 September 2008, Lord Michael Heseltine visited Millennium Point to see how the multi-million pound development has grown since, on behalf of the Millennium Commission, he came to Birmingham and announced £50 million funding to support the project back in 1996.
During his visit to Millennium Point, Lord Heseltine was taken on a tour of the building and Thinktank by Sir Bernard Zissman (Chairman of Millennium Point Trust and former Lord Mayor of Birmingham) and Dr. Nick Winterbotham (chief executive of Millennium Point and Thinktank) and also met with business leaders from organisations based in the development.
Lord Heseltine was a Millennium Commissioner and Deputy Prime Minister when he announced £50 million funding to Sir Bernard Zissman and the rest of the Millennium Point project team, outside Curzon Street Station in October 1996. Sir Bernard Zissman comments: “We welcome Lord Heseltine, 12 years after he came to Birmingham with a cheque for £50 million and a challenge to build one of the most exciting millennium projects in the country. Millennium Point has really turned a corner in recent months; we’re now fully let and looking forward to our future role within the developing City Park. We are very proud to showcase Millennium Point to Lord Heseltine as a truly successful Millennium Project, which could not have been accomplished without the support from the Millennium Commission.”
