Green Roof at The ICC wins environmental award
The UK’s most prestigious conference venue, The ICC, Birmingham, has claimed yet another plaudit, this time for one of its environmental initiatives.
The venue was handed the Heart of England in Bloom Environmental Award for its Green Roof as part of the Heart of England in Bloom 2008 awards.
The roof, which was installed in 2007 to encourage rare birds and wildlife back to the city centre, was featured in the competition as part of the Birmingham Floral Trail. The roof was identified by judges as one of the key elements in the environmental regeneration of the city centre.
Geoff Fenlon, General Manager, The ICC, said: “We are very pleased to have been part of the Birmingham Floral Trail. This award reinforces our position as the country’s leading conference and meetings destination, offering renewable and environmental solutions to our clients and their delegates.”
“At The ICC we also host a Combined Heat and Power generator, an efficient method of generating heating and hot water to buildings around Broad Street and Centenary Square, and a carbon calculator, which is actively monitoring the amount of CO2 that we are saving as a venue.”
The two-and-a-half mile Birmingham City Centre Floral Trail, which ran from The Mailbox, through The ICC and to the Jewellery Quarter, won the gold award and was named as the overall winner in the Urban Regeneration Category. The Floral Trail will now be the region’s representative in the national awards, to be announced in 2009.
The ICC is now preparing to host the Conservative Party Annual Conference, with 10,000 delegates expected to attend the venue from 28 September – 2 October.
