Emoción Flamenco

In the Grip of Emoción at Birmingham Town Hall – Flamenco Festival Launched November 2007

Driving energy, pulsing rhythms, joy and tears – the fiery magic of flamenco comes to Birmingham’s historic Town Hall in a sun-burst of dance and music from 9 – 11 November.

Over three intense nights, the city’s first Emoción festival showcases contrasting flamenco events from some of Spain’s finest artists:

Classic – Pepa Molina and Company (November 9) in a performance of pure flamenco, as raw and passionate as it gets. “A dancer to her bones, classic in her flamenco sensibility… with marvellous gestures” (Granada Today)

Contemporary – Los Arrieritos (November 10) present ’13 Rosas’ in their only UK date. It’s a powerful and inspiring show about thirteen women caught up in war, and which has scooped top awards in Spain and Europe “…the way they have distilled with such simplicity the reality of the situation and the emotional state is extraordinary…” (El Mundo)

Fusion – El Último Tango and Soloists (November  11) A real coup for Birmingham, Pepa Molina and soloists return for a second heady night of joyful movement, reinterpreting Argentina’s classic dance form through flamenco eyes and ears. Also featuring star tango singer Guillermo Rozenthuler and a company of tango dancers, Ultimo Tango Fusión promises a night of spine-tingling theatre, and foot-stamping energy.

Emoción Birmingham is set to become an annual celebration of great contemporary flamenco performance in Birmingham.

From its gypsy roots, authentic, contemporary Flamenco has evolved its own language of music, song and dance. A total theatrical experience that thrills audiences, it’s a uniquely traditional art form that is still living and growing – both on the streets and barrios as well as in the Flamenco Schools of Spain.

Emoción is centred on the city’s historic Town Hall within a month of its re-opening after a £30 million refit. With its state of the art facilities and acoustics, the Town Hall is a sumptuous setting for this celebration of Spain’s cultural heritage in Birmingham.
