Avatar spells out-of-this world success for IMAX

Avatar 3D has now broken all previous box office records to become the highest grossing film, ever shown at IMAX Cinema, Birmingham. As of Monday 18 January, the film grossed over £350,000 with 40,000 tickets sold and 100+ sell out shows.

IMAX spokesperson Caroline Durbin comments “AVATAR 3D has been an astonishing success by any standards, and now five weeks on from opening, its popularity is yet to fade.  We have sell out shows for the next two weekends, and will be programming more screenings throughout February to help us meet the demand.”

James Cameron’s AVATAR opened nationwide on 17 December 2009. It’s received huge critical acclaim, receiving two Golden Globe awards, and also great commercial success, having taken over $1.6 billion (£979m) at box offices worldwide to date.

The success of AVATAR 3D kick-starts another busy year for IMAX Cinema, Birmingham. Both Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland 3D’ and the animated adventure ‘How to Train Your Dragon 3D’ open in March. And in the coming months IMAX Cinema is looking forward to showing ‘Shrek Forever After 3D’ and ‘Toy Story 3D’.
