Sea Life Centre Brings Dolphins, Seals and Whales to Birmingham
Birmingham's National Sea Life Centre has secured rights to the first European screening of specially adapted footage from the BBC Planet Earth™ series in a new £1 million 4-D cinema attraction.
Audiences will find themselves in the thick of the wildlife action as sea creatures leap from the screen, in a 3-D movie experience they can watch, feel and even smell.
"This massive investment in the face of global recession reflects our belief that people will still want to enjoy quality leisure experiences no matter how tough things get," said Manager Joseph Mann.
"That's why we've teamed up with the leaders in 4-D technology, US-based Simex! Iwerks Entertainment, to develop this new facility to open this Easter."
The Planet Earth: Shallow Seas™ programme has been adapted with new 3-D visuals and the audience will also be showered with sea spray, feel gusts of sea breeze and smell the unmistakable odour of sea kelp.
“Obviously our centre is unable to house big creatures like whales, and for ethical reasons we wouldn’t keep dolphins in captivity. But this all-senses experience is a great way we can bring people closer to these fascinating creatures” says Sea Life Curator Graham Burrows.
The film will take Sea Life visitors on a journey alongside a cast of balletic sea lions as they dive through vast swirling bait balls of anchovy. It tracks a mother humpback whale and her calf as they navigate from their tropical nursery to the Arctic Circle as well as showing the greatest gathering of seabirds and whales ever captured in Digital HD.
