Burns Night Celebrated in Stratford

The 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s most famous poet Robert Burns is to be celebrated in Stratford.

The Stratford-upon-Avon District Caledonian Society is holding its 62nd annual Burns Night dinner dance at The Legacy Falcon Hotel in Chapel Street next Saturday. (January 24)

Burns was born in Ayrshire 250 years ago and his life will be remembered at a special event in the hotel’s Verona Suite at 7pm.

The society’s Alastair Dodds, who hails from Edinburgh but has lived in Stratford for over 20 years, said it promised to be a night to remember.

“Robert Burns will always be associated with Scotland and his great work is still as revered today,” he said.

“The society holds events throughout the year but Burns Night is always the highlight.

“The evening will follow the traditional format which has remained unchanged since Burns’ friends started the ritual soon after his death in 1796.

“We will start with the president’s ‘champagne’ reception and piper Eddie Cornett will pipe in our guests.

“There will be toasts to the haggis, the ‘immortal memory’ and the ‘Toon of Oor Adoption’ when Stratford Town Mayor Cllr Joyce Taylor will respond.

“There will also be Ceilidh dancing and Sarah Cushing will sing some beautiful Burns songs.

“It is a subtle combination of the formal and informal which honours Scotland’s greatest poet with fine food, fine words and songs and you don’t have to be a Scot to appreciate it!”

Jason Mayglothling, manager of The Legacy Falcon Hotel, said he was delighted the venue was hosting the society’s Burns Night for the first time.

“We’re expecting around 60 people and it promises to be an extremely enjoyable evening,” he said.

“The 250th anniversary of Burns’ birth will be celebrated by Scots across the globe and I hope this celebration of his life is a huge success.”
