Celebrating the Year of the Rat
Birmingham’s Chinese community will be celebrating the start of Chinese New Year on Sunday 10th February. A spectacular afternoon of free entertainment kicks off the start of a year of Chinese activities in the City.
The sound of firecrackers and the traditional Dragon Dance will start the New Year celebrations at 12pm at the Arcadian. The day will continue with acrobatic performances by the Bai-Ling Chinese Acrobatics Co Ltd (UK), children from the Overseas Chinese Association School and Birmingham Chinese School will perform traditional dances and the Birmingham Chinese Society Karaoke Group will be in full voice.
Councillor Ray Hassall , Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said:
“Chinese New Year is a colourful and entertaining event in the city centre which is family friendly and everyone is welcome to attend. It marks the start of a festival of special events and exhibitions on the theme of China in the lead up to the Bejing Olympics.”
As part of the national China celebrations, Birmingham City Council’s Museum and Art Gallery is hosting Chinese themed exhibitions of ceramics, historic photographs and contemporary art.
The Chinese New Year celebrations take place in the Arcadian centre from 12pm – 5pm. They are organised by the Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee with the support of Birmingham City Council.
